Demeter // Styled Shoot
Demeter is the goddess of the harvest, agriculture, sacred law and presides over the grains and fertility of the earth. A goddess of the Olympian generation, she is the daughter of Rhea and Cronus and sister to Hestia, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, and Hera. With Zeus, she had a daughter, Persephone.
After Hades abducted Persephone, Demeter grieved. The earth became barren through her neglect; thus, the winter season and its manifestations were a reflection of Demeter’s emotional state during Persephone’s absence. As goddess of the harvest, she is one of the few goddesses involved with mortals on a daily basis.
Demeter was worshipped throughout Greece, especially around harvest time and many festivals were held in her name. Her chief festival was a sacred event that only happened every five years. Demeter is described as an empathetic, loving, and persistent goddess with a generous and emotional nature.
The Greek goddess Demeter, often associated with the fertility of the earth, is represented by emblems symbolizing her loving and hard-working nature. Her symbols are a torch, pig, serpent, cornucopia, poppy flower, sacred law, bread, wheat, agriculture, and the harvest.
Photographer’s Statement:
The seven Greek Goddesses, Aphrodite, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hera, Hestia, and Persephone, are a crucial part of Greek mythology. There were considered the pinnacle of beauty, power, and majesty. As such, there were the subject of fascination and admiration for the people in Ancient Greece. Each goddess had certain domains that they ruled over and were prominent in many myths.
I hope to capture my vision of the Greek goddesses in my photographs to showcase the way that I see beauty, power, history, literature, and art. This collection of work comes from my desire to preserve and showcase my vision of not only powerful, strong, beautiful women, but a wonderful ancient society that still continues to influence us in our world today.
